Ponyscape v0.4 Patched!!

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 4, 2013, 7:50 PM
Hi Everypony!!

The patched version of Ponyscape 0.4 is here!!  Currently, the Windows, 64-bit Linux, Mac OS X 10.6,  10.7, and 10.8 packages are available!  The Linux package was built on Linux Mint 14, but it should work on most up-to-date distributions.  On Windows, download the zip file and extract it using 7zip or winrar and run ponyscape.exe.  On Linux, download the deb package and install it by running "sudo dpkg -i <filename>" or by using a GUI package installer of your choice.  On Mac OS X, open the dmg package, drag Ponyscape.app to the Applications folder, and launch Ponyscape.app from your Applications folder.  For this patch version, I revamped the Linux package so that everything is now installed in a separate directory from Inkscape and you now run "ponyscape" instead of "inkscape" from a terminal.  Additionally I revamped the Mac OS package so that it's now called Ponyscape.app (and I tweaked it a bit so it runs smoother).

You can get the binary packages here (md5's are provided for checksumming):

Windows: ponyscape.org/downloads/ponysc…
md5: f893672cf43313184b174b88bea3ee96

Linux: ponyscape.org/downloads/ponysc…

Mac OS X 10.8 (x11): ponyscape.org/downloads/Ponysc…
md5: e524242ff8bf619917ac36c0f7d329c1

:new:Mac OS X 10.8 (non x11): ponyscape.org/downloads/Ponysc…

Mac OS X 10.7 (non x11): ponyscape.org/downloads/Ponysc…

Mac OS X 10.6 (non x11): ponyscape.org/downloads/Ponysc…
md5: 80da15a4f39830acf5759cf4bd9ca3a0

Alternatively, you can download the entire source code and compile from scratch.  I can confirm that compiling works on Windows and Linux, the Mac OS build requires some tweaking but should work if you replace the files in /packaging/macosx with the files found here: www.mediafire.com/?3m26zczoyvx… .  Compilation instructions can be found on Inkscape's wiki ( [link] ).

Here's what's included in this patched release:

:bulletblue: Fixed swatch button in Fill & Stroke Dialog

:bulletblue: Increased size of the swatch bar at the bottom

:bulletblue: Fixed some random swatch setting issues (thanks to tgolyi for a patch which helped with this!)

:bulletblue: Fixed "Edit path on canvas" in Path-Effects dialog (patch by tgolyi, big thanks to him!)

:bulletblue: Improved swatch efficiency!!

:bulletblue: Included experimental path-effects in the Linux build

And now a quick legal disclosure (only because I have to :p).  This software is provided as-is and without any warranty.  Misuse of this software or use of this software in an illegal nature is in no way the fault of the developer or the upstream Inkscape development team.  The developers are not responsible for any loss or damages that may occur while using the software.  This software is licensed under the GPL version 2.0, a copy of which will be provided upon request.  Inkscape itself is licensed under the GPL, and is free and open-source software, meaning I am allowed to modify and redistribute the source code and/or binaries.

I hope this patched release will fix any issues you guys may have been having from upgrading to 0.4!  I will be working on more bugfixes and improvements for 0.5, so if anyone has any feature suggestions, feel free to contact me!

If you do have windows 10, right click the folder and click unzip. I'm actually not completely sure whether you need to right click. However, just get to a point where you can click unzip/the unzipping menu pops up.

Now, select the Ponyscape file and click "Extract" (Blue minus button). Choose where to save it, and, well, save it.

Sorry if those instructions were bit hard to understand; its been a while since I have unzipped something. But I'm sure its something along that line. Finding the unzip button shouldn't be too hard, and from there on it only gets simpler.

Hope everything helps!!

Hmm... which version of windows? If its windows 10 the unzipping function is built in, but in other versions I believe you need to download software.

I finished with my vector, and when I try to save it as .png, a few lines disappear

You can't save it as a PNG file, you need to go to file, and then click kn export. A menu should pop up. If you do that, you do not lose any lines.

Somehow, I cannot open the program. I downloaded it, but when I click the downloaded file it says it doesn't know what program to use to open the downloaded file. I'm using Windows 7. Help?

It is a ZIP file, meaning you need a software to decompress it.

Vectoring is not like traditional digital art. Instead of dragging, try clicking and the nodes should appear. After that, use the second tool (node editing tool) to change the line and give it curves.

Do you have 7Zip? If you do, then use it to unzip it. Then, you click the "Extract" button and save it where you want it to be saved.

When installing the Linux binary on 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu Software Centre returns a warning:

The package is of bad quality
The installation of a package which violates the quality standards isn't allowed. This could cause serious problems on your computer. Please contact the person or organisation who provided this package file and include the details beneath.
Lintian check results for /tmp/ponyscape_0.4_patched-0_amd64.deb:
E: ponyscape: maintainer-name-missing root@ted-VirtualBox
E: ponyscape: maintainer-address-malformed root@ted-VirtualBox
Use of uninitialized value $name in pattern match (m//) at /usr/share/perl5/Lintian/Check.pm line 203.

I installed it anyway, and ran ponyscape.

ponyscape: error while loading shared libraries: liblcms.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

After I installed liblcms1, I reran ponyscape, and it returned an error:

ponyscape: error while loading shared libraries: libpoppler.so.28: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So I checked /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu and there was a file named libpoppler.so.44, but no libpoppler.so.28.

It looks like there's a brand new suite in development, so I'll just stick with vanilla Inkscape until it comes out.

How differently does it work from normal Inkscape? Is their even a difference?
Reply
:iconcottonball1014:
Cottonball1014 Featured By Owner Jan 11, 2016
It has:

A LOT more path effects, making it easier to draw circles and do tapers
A fill between strokes function that works with more than 2 strokes

That's about all of the major differences but them alone can make your life much easier.

well, it also has a zero-width option thing on the right for the end of lines so that they're not awkwardly block-y when they end. I'm not the best person to answer this question, probably, but it's just a few things I've noticed. hope it helps at least a little

To clarify, it has a path effect called power stroke that makes it easier to make tapers. You no longer need to do "Object to Path" which is not only much more time consuming but also can make other parts of the line that you don't want to taper a different size.

I've got Ponyscape on Windows, but each time I use it, after a bit, it crashes and I need to restart the program (not the computer). It is getting quite annoying. Other than that, it's awesome for making pony vectors!

How close were you?
  1. You downloaded the Windows 7z archive uncorrupted, and its MD5 is indeed f893672cf43313184b174b88bea3ee96.
  2. You downloaded a version of 7-zip for Windows.
  3. You installed 7-zip.
  4. You opened 7-zip and used it to decompress ponyscape_0.4_patched.7z
  5. You entered the extracted directory and ran ponyscape.exe.

The filename is ponyscape.exe.

If that doesn't tip you off that the extraction worked, check the About screen (Help→About).

I have the ponyscape file it seems, but it opens up as inkscape. I don't know man. It didn't even seem like it extracted anything in the first place. The whole process is confusing me.

Look for Ponyscape-specific features, such as the presence of Object→Objects…

These are not present in the current release of Inkscape, nor will they be in the next.

It won't decompress a file that big unless I pay for the full version of Windows 7z archive
I have followed every link carefully and nothing has worked.

Clearly, then, you made a wrong turn picking your decompressor.

Use this 7zip binary: portableapps.com/apps/utilitie…
